Building relationships with youth, so they
can build relationships with Christ...

Mission Statement

To share the Good News of the Gospel of Jesus Christ with unchurched young people in the Central Pennsylvania community. By mobilizing and equipping God's Family of Believers, we will use any means to build relationships and develop programs that clearly communicate Jesus of the Bible.

Our Faith Statement Is:

  • We believe there is one God, eternally existing in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
  • We believe the Bible to be the infallible inspired Word of God.
  • We believe Jesus Christ is true God and man. We believe in His virgin birth, sinless life, miracles, death as a substitute for man, bodily resurrection, ascension to the Father, intercessory work for believers and personal return in power.
  • We believe God created man and woman and loves us. We fell from relationship with God through disobedience and we are in desparate need of salvation through faith in Jesus. Those who believe receive forgiveness and eternal life. Those who do not belive are lost to eternity in Hell.
  • We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit who indwells believers in Christ and empowers them to live a Godly life and proclaim Christ as Lord and Savior.
  • We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ, a unity that is displayed through many congregations that are members of one Body of Christ.

Core Beliefs:

  • We believe that every teenager needs to hear the Gospel Message focused on salvation, and have it presented in a way that they will understand it.
  • We believe that the best way to present the Gospel Message is through relationships.
  • We believe that all meetings need to be non threatening, accepting of all students and not boring .
  • We believe building relationships with teenagers will bring them to Jesus and that is more important than flashy meetings or expensive programs.
  • We believe we need to intentionally go after non churched teenagers.
  • We believe that we need to go into the teen’s world.
  • We believe our ministry goals need to include reaching the entire student body.
  • We believe we are not only a bridge to Jesus but also a bridge to the local church for unchurched teenagers.
  • We believe as staff we must live the Christian Life not just talk it

History of Central PA Youth Ministries

From the early 40's till the middle 50's, Youth for Christ of the Central Pennsylvania area was very loosely organized and it had only a few activities. A Pastor from Sunbury formed the Sunbury Youth Fellowship. It's purpose was to reach all of the youth of Sunbury. Later this same group began to reach out to the entire county of Northumberland. This was the beginning of Northumberland County Youth for Christ. Then, in March 1954, a Rev. Ellis Rowe got a small group of businessmen together to show the Billy Graham film "Mr. Texas". Together this small committed group of laymen saw God do a remarkable thing. One thing followed another and what had begun as a small effort now became a regular Saturday night program. All through 1955 into the early part of 1956 Rev. Rowe and his small group carried on. Then in 1956 Glen Furman with the help of many local concerned adults added a new dimension to the YFC ministry with such things as Bible quizzing, Ocean City conferences, and Teen Choruses.

During the 1958 to 1960 period, YFC Bible Clubs were established and many young people found a new relationship with God right in the confines of the school they attended. These were exciting days as new inroads were forged into the youth community. The ministry had moved from a loose association to a chartered member of the Youth for Christ International.

The stage had been set and in early 1960, the Board of Directors asked Ed Young and his wife Joyce, recent seminary graduates, to come and head the Susquehanna Valley program. Ed was to stay for a period of ten years and leave behind an impressive record of achievement. Ed and his faithful wife Joyce poured their lives into teenager after teenager.

August of 1971 saw the Board interview and call Frank Chivalette as Executive Director. Frank had served for three years as a Campus Life Club Director in the area and then had served pastorates in New Jersey and New York City. Arriving with a new baby, a new job, and a new place of residence, he attacked the needs of YFC head on. The organization grew - new staff were hired and new programs started. By 1972 the budget had grown to $50,000 a year and God continued to meet needs. Following the addage that "much faith demands much action" the Board of Directors authorized the merger of Juniata Valley Youth for Christ into what is now known as the Southwestern Module. Later this area was split in two to form the Juniata Module and the Southwest Module. This necessitated the call of even more staff to meet the growing needs of young people.

The work continued to be faithful in proclaiming the Good News of Jesus. In 1991 the organization left their association with Youth for Christ and changed its name to Central Pa Youth Ministries. With a name change came the addition of a Youth Center in Berwick, an annual youth conference that attracts over 1000 local teens every year and a staff that had grown to 12 persons plus a budget of nearly $700,000.
